The Mahari's were temple dancers in the Jagannath Temple in Puri Orissa. They were also known as Devadasis who went through a ritualistic marriage with the Lord. Lord Jagannath is the Lord of the Universe. This is where the lineage of Odissi dance comes from. They were highly revered and it was very auspicious to see one perform her ritualistic dance.
